Alfonso Soriano Trash Talked by Pro Wrestler at WWE Pay Per View

Alfonso Soriano on Camera at WWE Pay Per View

Well what do you know, Alfonso Soriano is a Pro Wrestling fan!  He appeared in the stands at the WWE pay per view which took place May 17, 2009 at the All State Arena in Rosemont, IL.  Soriano didn’t just watch in the stands though, he got to be involved in a staged on camera moment when one of the pro-wrestlers singled him out for a verbal beatdown.

Talking on the mic is a time honored tradition in wrestling.  It’s part of how wrestlers help tell the story, which is important because pro wrestling is “sports entertainment” and so a storyline needs to be established.  If you can cut a good “promo” as well as perform in the ring, then you can go a long way in pro wrestling, just as The Rock.

One of the most reliable ways for a “villain” to establish himself as a bad guy is to insult the hometown crowd and city.  Even fake fake wrestler Andy Kaufman knew the best way to get the crowd to hate him was to insult the crowd in every way possible.  Besides insulting the crowds intelligence, calling them stupid, saying there town stinks and is full of rednecks, you can always insult the local sports team.

Or in this case, local sports star Alfonso Soriano.  The wrestler known as “The Miz” calls out Alfonso Soriano and calls the Cubs losers.  You know that is going to get some boos in Chicago.  Funny thing is, even Soriano gets a few boos from the crowd, most likely from White Sox fans.  Anyway, The Miz spends a minute taking cheap shots at Soriano and the Cubs.

Alfonso just kind of stands there and stares.  I’m sure he knew he was going to be insulted but probably didn’t know exactly what was going to be said.  Obviously Soriano wasn’t really going to jump in the ring and attack this guy.  It was definitely all planned though and imagine Soriano was probably back stage shaking hands with the wrestlers before the show.

I sure hope he didn’t really take this seriously though, because Alfonso is in a serious slump right now.  If the Cubs don’t make the playoffs, I’m coming after you Miz!

And don’t take it too seriously Alfonso, we still love you.
