The 2009 Season is finally here!
So what are the experts (see above photo) predicting about the 2009 Chicago Cubs Season? I’ve gathered some 2009 predictions below from some baseball sports writers. You’ll be happy that several writers predicted the Cubs will win the World Series in 2009!
Out of the 40 top sports writers (I’m including myself in the group because I’m clearly delusional):
36 picked the Chicago Cubs to win the National League Central.
13 picked the Chicago Cubs to go to the World Series.
and 8 picked the Chicago Cubs to WIN the World Series.
Now of course, I am among those 8 world renowned sports writers who picked the Cubs to win the World Series. Get ready my friends, because THIS IS THE YEAR!

Baseball Prospectus predicts the 2009 Chicago Cubs will win the NL Central Division with a 93 -69 record! They did not pick a World Series winner yet but it’s safe to assume they would have picked the Cubs. (Read the rest of baseball prospectus 2009 predictions)
ESPN Chicago Cubs 2009 Predictions
- Jorge Arangure Jr. predicts the Cubs will defeat the Red Sox to win the World Series!
- Rob Neyer predicts the Cubs will defeat the Yankess to win the World Series!
- Gene Wojciechowski predicts the Cubs will defeat the Red Sox to win the World Series!
So that’s three ESPN analyists who predict the Cubs will win the World Series! Three others predict the Cubs will win the National League title but not the World Series.

Three Sports Illustrated writers predict Cubs to WIN the World Series, two more predict they will make it to the World Series and everybody else except one predicts the Cubs to win the NL Central.

The Sporting News Predicts the Chicago Cubs will win the NL Central, Win the NL Pennant, go to the World Series but lose to the Yankees. (They’re close, but not quite)
Fox Sports Chicago Cubs 2009 Predictions
Good News! Both Robert MacLeod and Jeff Blair predict the Chicago Cubs will win the NL Central, National League Championship and play in the World Series versus the Red Sox! Then Robert MacLeod predicts the Cubs will WIN the World Series! Jeff Blair predicts the Red Sox will win it all.
And Finally the Delusional Cubs Fan’s 2009 Predictions:
The Delusional Cubs Fan predicts the Cubs will win the NL Central, defeat the Phillies to win the NL Championship and then defeat the Boston Red Sox in a historic World Series!
That’s right. The Cubs win it all. I’m writing this on opening day so it’s easy to be delusional.
Other predictions: Big Z will win 17 games, Dempster and Lilly will both win 15, Harden will win 14 and Sean Marshal wins 8. Soriano has a big year. Milton Bradley makes an impact in the clubhouse and in the box score. Reed Johnson wins the starting centerfielder job away from Fukudome.
The Yankees will not make the playoffs for the second year in a row, despite outspending all of baseball. Girardi gets canned. The White Sox will not make the playoffs. All is well.
