The Chicago Cubs starting lineup will include a lot of familiar faces from last year, with all of the Cubs position players returning with the exception of Milton Bradley, who has been replaced by the newly acquired free agent Marlon Byrd.
In the Cubs infield you will see all the 2009 starters returning: Derrek Lee at 1B, Mike Fontenot at 2B, Ryan Theriot at SS, Aramis Ramirez at 3B and Geovany Soto behind the plate. In the outfield you will have Alfonso Soriano in LF, Marlon Byrd in CF and Kosuke Fukudome moving back over to RF after a playing last season in center. All three of the outfielders will need to perform because both former All Star Xavier Nady and former #1 draft pick Tyler Colvin will be looking for more playing time of the bench.
The 2010 Cubs opening day roster features four rookies, with three of those in the bullpen: Justin Berg
Esmailin Caridad and James Russell, as well as outfielder Tyler Colvin.
The Cubs bench looks stronger and more experienced than in 2009. The Cubs 2010 bench players will be Jeff Baker, Tyler Colvin, Xavier Nady, Chad Tracy and Koyie Hill all providing reliable backups.
The starting rotation will consist of the returning Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster and Randy Wells in the top 3 spots and the newly acquired Carlos Silva and Tom Gorzelanny in the four and five spots. One of those two pitchers will have to move to the bullpen when Ted Lilly returns.
The Cubs roster looks good, featuring both experience and youth. The Cubs are breaking camp with an improved team over last year.
