Chicago Cubs Finish April 2009 with a 10-11 Record

Well, this was not quite the start we were hoping for.  The Chicago Cubs have finished April 2009 with a 10-11 record, one game below the .500 mark.  And unfortunately, a few of those loses have been BRUTAL.  The Cubs just looked terrible in some of them.  Sigh.

In April 2008 Cubs fans were full of hope as the Cubs won a franchise record 17 games in April 2008 and finished the month with a 17-10 record.  We we’re feeling nice and delusional with wonderful thoughts that “This is the Year”.

In 2009, not so much.  There’s been injuries.  There’s been a big lack of timely hitting.  There’s been costly errors.  Several players have gotten off to a very slow start, including Derrek Lee, Milton Bradley, Mike Fontenot and Geovany Soto.

There’s still a few reasons for hope though.  Once the Cubs have their 3-4-5 hitters all back in the lineup at once, they should start to score some more runs.  Aramis Ramirez will be back in the lineup and Lee, Soto and Bradley will all hit better than the sub-.200 averages they had in April.

And, if you look back at recent Cubs history, the Cubs finished April 2007 with a 10-14 recprd.  They looked pretty lifeless that month but as the season went on they got better and better.  The Cubs had the best record in baseball the second half and even ended up winning the Central Division.

So all hope is not lost.  Back away from the ledge.  It’s a long baseball season and a lot of good things can happen.  The Cubbies will hit their stride and start winning consistently.

Until then, you should just crack another Old Style and think about warmer weather and more wins.  Don’t worry, it’s coming.

May 1st – Cubs Win! Back to the .500 mark. Boy the Cubbies needed a win and it was great to see them put eight runs on the board finally, on the strength of Ryan Theriot’s grand slam. We needed that one buddy! The bullpen only gave up 1 run in 5 innings of work which is an encouraging improvement. Dave Patton got his first Major League win by pitching two scoreless innings.

May begins on a positive note! GO CUBS!
