Chicago Cubs Opening Day 2010
Opening Day is here at last! After a long, cold winter, a relatively uneventful spring training and many months of waiting for Next Year to get here… it arrives.
Get ready Cubs fans… THIS IS THE YEAR!
The Chicago Cubs will open the 2010 season against the Atlanta Braves in Turner Field. Usually opening day is usually the coldest day of spring in Chicago but of course since the Cubs won’t be opening at home this year, the weather forecast is for a beautiful 73 degrees and sunny at Wrigley. Figures.
That’s okay, it will be a balmy 85 degrees down in Hotlanta and we know the Cubs players will appreciate the chance to play on a hot opening day this year. It will help Soriano and Ramirez get their bats warmed up quicker.
Carlos Zambrano will be the Chicago Cubs opening day pitcher and will have that honor for the sixth consecutive season. Big Z showed up to camp early, 15 pounds lighter, acting focused and talking about how he wants to put his dramatic outbursts in the past for good. Everyone wants a big comeback year from Zambrano, himself included.
To be fair, Zambrano pitched better than his 9-7 record would indicate. The Cubs biggest problem last year was scoring runs and all the starters were victims of poor run support and quite a few blown saves. Zambrano, who at nine seasons and counting has been with the Chicago Cubs longer than any current player, looks focused and ready to go this spring.
This year is going to be a big year for Big Z and it all starts today.
Go Cubs!
Opening Day Results:
It was not pretty. Cubs lost to the Braves 16-5 and Big Z got knocked around for eight runs in an inning and a third. After 4 1/2 scoreless innings from Sean Marshall and James Russell, quarterback Jeff Samardzja gave up 6 runs in 1/3 of an inning. Then Justin Berg was dusted up for a couple more. YOUCH!
Pat Hughes said it was the most runs the given up by the Cubs on opening day since baseball started keeping records. Not a good opening day. But a record breaking one. Memorable for all the wrong reasons.
Analysis: Marlon Byrd hit a home run in his first Chicago Cubs at bat! Sean Marshall looked like he was ready to step right into the starting rotation. James Russell pitched two scoreless innings and walked none in his major league debut. All things to feel good about.
It’s just one game. Now that opening day is over, you can expect me to make less of a big deal about individual games. Opening day is a big deal; it’s the start of baseball season and to us in the Midwest it means winter is really over.
But as far as the season goes, it’s only one game. One hundred and sixty one more to go. This is still the year.
