Josh Vitters Rookie Card Chicago Cubs Top Prospect

Josh Vitters was the Chicago Cubs #1 draft pick in the 2007 amateur draft and has been considered one of the Cubs top prospects ever since.  Starlin Castro may have stolen more of the spotlight lately as a top prospect but ESPN, Baseball America and MLB.com have all named Josh Vitters as the Cubs top prospect within the past two seasons.

Josh Vitters put himself on the Cubs top prospects list with two great minor league seasons in 2008 and 2009 for the Cubs single-A teams.  In 2008 Vitters hit a combined .322 with two teams and in 2009 he hit a combined .284, which included his .316 and 15 home runs season for the Peoria Cubs and manager Ryne Sandberg.

Vitters is still projected as a third baseman although his defense is considered only average at third so some scouts still believe he could end up in the majors as a first baseman or left fielder.  He doesn’t walk a lot but he doesn’t strike out a lot either. Vitters is projected as having the potential to be a 25+ home run hitter with great bat speed and a possible middle of the order hitter.

Josh Vitters will be invited to the Chicago Cubs 2010 Spring Training to get a chance to workout with the major leaugers and make an impression on Cubs management.  Vitters is not expected to make the team but the Cubs hope he learns from the experience and takes it with him into the 2010 season.  At only 20 years old he may be a couple of seasons away from the big leagues still but Cubs fans will get there chance to see Vitters soon.
