Go Cubs Go!

Go Cubs Go! It’s been billed as the official Cubs Theme Song and it certainly has a special place in the hearts of Cubs fans.  (except for a few jaded ones but this isn’t really the site for them, is it?)

2009 will mark the 25 year anniversary of Go Cubs Go and I’ve had a lot of people asking me about this song lately.  A few people have actually want to know what it’s called.  As a lifelong Cubs fan and one who can even remember when this song originally came out, it seems obvious to me that the song is called “Go Cubs Go”.  But no matter how obvious that may be to the Delusional One, I have to remember there are both new and young fans out there.

I’m frequently asked about the “Cubs Win Song”, the “Cubs Theme Song”, the “Cubs Victory Song” and even the “Hey Chicago Song”.

So just to make it official: The Chicago Cubs Song played at the end of each home victory at Wrigley Field is named “Go Cubs Go!“  It was written by Chicago musician and lifelong Cubs fan Steve Goodman in 1984.

About Go Cubs Go

In 1983, the official Cubs theme song was named “It’s a Beautiful Day for a Ball Game”.  The Cubs general manager at the time was Dallas Green, and he was interested in creating an updated song with a positive message that didn’t have anything to do with the idea of the Cubs as “lovable losers”.

WGN Program Director Dan Fabian was excited about the possibility of a new song and began the search. Fabian pitched the idea of writing a new Cubs theme song to folk musician Steve Goodman when he was in town for an appearance on WGN Radio’s Roy Leonard Show.  Goodman was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and area resident who immediately jumped at the opportunity to write a song for his favorite team.

Steve Goodman had previously written “When the Cubs Go Marching In” and  “A Dying Cubs Fans Last Request“, a humorous but somber song which was not the upbeat ditty the Cubs were looking for by any means.  He also famously wrote “City of New Orleans” for Arlo Guthrie.  Now he got to work right away to create an anthem which would celebrate the optimism and hope shared by all Cubs fans, including himself.  Goodman went to work despite suffering from terminal leukemia, which by 1984 was quickly getting worse.

Go Cubs Go was finished and recorded by Goodman in time for the the 1984 season and the song made it’s debut on WGN Radio and TV on opening day.   The new Cubs song quickly became an instant classic and was the anthem for the 1984 season, a year that saw the Cubs (yet again) come within a game of going to the World Series.

Steve Goodman was able to see his Cubs anthem become a hit and enjoyed and listened to by millions of Cubs fans during the 1984 season.  He did not see the Cubs playoff appearance though.  Goodman passed away on September 20, 1984, four days before the Chicago Cubs would clinch the National League East division title.

I remember being a young preteen Cubs fan at the time, and I loved the song.  Still do.  In 1984 I must have listened to Go Cubs Go hundreds of times.  I think I listened to it at least 12 times in a row after the Cubs won both games 1 and 2 of the playoffs.

Then I learned what it really meant to be a Cubs fan.  You have to learn to deal with disappointment.  As I cried when the Cubs were eliminated from the playoffs, my mom assured me, “Don’t worry.  Wait till next year, the Cubs will be back in the playoffs again.

I spent a lot of years waiting till next year.

Steve Goodman might be surprised that his Cubs song is still played on the radio and in Wrigley Field 25 years later.  In 2008, it may have become even more popular than ever.  The Cubs management wisely took notice of the nostalgia of long time fans like myself and the enthusiasm of new fans who sang along to the song at the 2008 Cubs Convention.

They began playing the song over the speakers of Wrigley Field after each home victory in the 2008 season, and the song just took off once more and became part of the Cubs game experience.  Even when you were listening to the game on WGN radio, Pat and Ron would wait for the song to finish before beginning the post game commentary.  It became the Cubs theme song for the season yet again.  (Another season which would end in disappointment, yet again.)

So Dallas Green,  Dan Fabian and Steve Goodman all got there wish and then some: Go Cubs Go has become the official Chicago Cubs anthem.  It’s a happy, optimisitic and celebratory song that has become a classic.  When we hear it at the end of a Cubs game, we just feel good, and think that maybe, just maybe, this is the year.

Go Cubs Go Lyrics by Steve Goodman

Baseball season’s underway
Well you better get ready for a brand new day.

Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.

They’re singing …
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go

Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.

Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go

Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.

They got the power, they got the speed
To be the best in the National League
Well this is the year and Cubs are real
So come on down to Wrigley Field

We’re singing now …

Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.

Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.

Baseball time is here again
You can catch it all on WGN
So stamp you feet and clap your hands
Chicago Cubs got the greatest fans.

You’re singing now …

Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.

Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
