He’s already been on Baseball Americas Top Prospects list, ESPN’s top prospects list (#12) and he’s just landed on MLB.com Top 50 Prospects of 2010 list at #22.  Everyone seems to be saying that Starlin Castro is the Chicago Cubs shortstop of the future.

So who is this Starlin Castro that everyone is talking about?  Starlin Castro is a 19 year old shortstop originally from the Dominican Republic signed by the Cubs in 2006.  Castro has three seasons of minor league experience and has had success at each level of the minor leagues he has played.

After hitting .311 in the Arizona Rookie League in 2008 he captured the Cubs management’s attention and gained a promotion to the Cubs Daytona affiliate in 2009 where he hit .299 and was promoted to the Cubs AA Tennessee Smokies affiliate where he played for Ryne Sandberg and hit .288.  From there he was promoted to the Arizona Fall league so he could continue progressing and finished with a .376 average there.

“I haven’t had a player go through the system who has done what he’s done” said Cubs player development director Oneri Fleita at the end of the 2009 season. “It seems like it takes some guys a year before we see any gains. We’re seeing gains in Castro weekly, monthly, if not daily.”

Starlin Castro is progressing at as a player, both offensively and defensively.  His hitting has been good and continues to improve but scouts say that his defense at shortstop is already major league caliber.  From everything the scouts are saying, they expect that he could be ready for the major leagues in another year.

In fact, some are saying we could see Starlin Castro in the majors before the 2010 season is even over.  At the very least, Cubs fans and his future teammates will see him in this years spring training.  Castro will get his chance for Lou Pinella and the Cubs coaching staff to take a look at him and to learn from the big league players.

Time will tell if Starlin Castro is the real deal or just the next Felix Pie but we do have reasons to believe in Castro.  He’s young, he’s hungry, he keeps getting better.  The Cubs won’t be calling up the 19 year old to the major leagues just yet but he is on the fast track.

Starlin Castro is going to be a star.

We’ll see you soon.
