This years Cubs vs Indians series is anticipated by a lot of Cubs fans this year because it will mark the return to Wrigley field of Kerry Wood and Mark DeRosa. Both of these highly popular players became members of the Indians during the 2008-09 offseason. Wood signed with them as a free agent after Jim Hendry told him he wasn’t reinterested in resigning him and Mark DeRosa was traded to the Indians for some magic beans (or possibly minor league middle relievers, I can’t remember).

Very few Cubs fans wanted to see them go. Kerry Wood played ten seasons for the Chicago Cubs and was popular as a player, clubhouse leader and community fundraiser. Mark DeRosa became very popular with Cubs fans in a short time for his tough play, versatility, media and fan friendly attitude and leadership. Many fans were angry when he was traded, ironic considering how much they criticized Jim Hendry for signing him in the first place back in 2007.

The thing is, their 2009 replacements have done very little to make Cubs fans believe these were good moves. We all know how valuable Mark DeRosa would have been on the Cubs in 2009 filling in for injured players and starting games at second. He currently has more RBI’s than anyone on the Cubs does and so far has outplayed his replacements Aaron Miles, Mike Fontenot, Ryan Freel and Milton Bradley, not to mention Geovany Soto and Derrek Lee. And Kevin Gregg hasn’t exactly been dominant as the new Cubs closer.

So I expect that Kerry Wood and Mark DeRosa will be welcomed to Wrigley Field with open arms and big rounds of applause. Maybe even a standing ovation, who knows. Cubs fans will want to express not only how much they respect Wood and DeRosa, they will want to send a message to Jim Hendry that they’re still not happy about these moves.

So why wouldn’t you want to go to this game? It will be a fun series and the crowd will be into it. Won’t it be exciting (perhaps excruciating) if the Cubs have to face Kerry Wood in the 9th with the game on the line? Will DeRosa seek to show Hendry the mistake he made? This will be exciting.
