Chicago Cubs vs Detroit Tigers 2009

The Chicago Cubs will be visiting Comerica park to play the Detroit Tigers in June as part of the Cubs 2009 Interleague Schedule. It will be fun to go visit our neighbors to the north for a rare Cubs and Tigers game. Though the Cubs and Tigers have a storied history, they don’t actually play very often. So what about the history between these two teams? The Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers have met in the World Series four times, in 1945, 1935, 1908 and 1907. So the last time the Chicago Cubs actually won a World Series was way back in 1908 and it was over the Detroit Tigers. That was the second of the Cubs two consecutive World Series wins. Two World Series in a row! Sure sounds nice, huh?

Since that time the Cubs haven’t fared very well in the World Series or against the Tigers. The modern days Cubs currently have a four game losing streak against the Tigers in interleague play and trail in the interleague series Cubs 3 wins – Detroit 8 wins. The last time the Cubs played Detroit was in 2006 at Wrigley and the Tigers swept the Cubs in all three games, defeating pitchers Glendon Rusch, Carlos Marmol and Mark Prior.

So it’s really time for the Cubs to get out there and show up the Tigers and kick them around! Detroit is a competitve team this year after really sucking it up in 2008. They’ve got some good hitters in All Star Miguel Cabrera, ex White Sux outfielder Maglio Ordonez and third basemen Brandon Inge, among others. The pitching staff can be hit or miss and features starters Justin Verlander, Rick Porcello, Armando Galaraga, Edwin Jackson and the anxious former Cub Dontrelle Willis. Fernando Rodney is the Tigers closer.
