Derrek Lee’s 21 Game Hitting Streak
As it turns out, someone on the Chicago Cubs did remember how to hit. In April 2009 it was Soriano and Fukudome who turned it up a notch hitting. In May it was Ryan Theriot with his power streak and consistency, and in June it has been Derrek Lee.
Derrek Lee had a personal best 21 game hitting streak in May 2009. It has helped erase the terrible .189 average he had in April and Derrek’s current batting average has risen all the way up to .292 during his hitting streak. Just as some were beginning to question the skills of Lee, he got hot and reminded those people why we all loved him in the first place.
Through the slump and through the hitting streak, Derrek Lee has kept his cool and run at an even keel like we’ve come to expect. “That’s about as bad an April that I’ve had, and I’ve had some bad ones. That’s the game. That’s why you try not to ride the roller coaster. It’s a long season. You could have a great April, but it’s the same thing. Keep your nose down, keep working. Usually you tend to average out in the middle.“
His bat has been a much needed force in keeping the Cubs in contention through their streaky month of June. We all know the Cubs have had serious problems generating runs so Derrek’s hitting streak, the longest by a Cubs since Jerome Walton’s 30 game streak in 1989, has been a big help.
Derrek Lee’s streak ended in a loss against the Detroit Tigers which featured the first career home run by Jake Fox and the announcement of a failed marijuana drug test by Geovany Soto. Between those items and the Cubs loss, Lee’s hit streak ending was buried. Not that Derrek probably minds, he’ll just quietly get back to business like he does every single day.
Congratulations on your hitting streak and thanks for helping out the team this month. You just barely missed knocking one out of the park yesterday to keep the streak going. Now whatever it is you’ve been doing during the streak, whatever you’ve been eating for meals, or crazy superstitious thing you did during the streak, PLEASE pass it on to the rest of the team. We’re heading to the south side and the boys need to break out bats.
