Eddie Vedder Chicago Cubs Song “All the Way”

Someday We’ll Go All the Way by Eddie Vedder

Eddie Vedder, you have forever earned my respect.  To me this is easily the best Chicago Cubs song written since Steve Goodman’s Go Cubs Go in 1984.  That was written 24 years before this one and we still find ourselves “waiting for next year”.

Eddie Vedder’s Chicago Cubs song was apparently written in the spring of 2008.  Eddie Vedder was attending a Cubs spring training game in Mesa, AZ and naturally used his celebrity status to get into the clubhouse.  (If I was a celebrity I would milk that to get into as many Cubs games as possible too!)  In the clubhouse he was lucky enough to meet Mr Cubs Ernie Banks. (So have I and I’ll have to relate that story sometime).

Ernie Banks had a vague notion of who Eddie Vedder was and knew that he was a musician.  Apparently while talking with Eddie he said jokingly “Well you should write me a song!“.  Eddie Vedder was of course awed by meeting Mr. Cub, (who is everything you would hope he would be when you meet him) and said later about their meeting that “Looking into Ernie Banks eyes was like looking into the eyes of Wrigley Field.”

He was so inspired that Eddie Vedder wrote his Chicago Cubs anthem that very night in his hotel room.

Eddie Vedder Cubs song “All the Way” or “Someday We’ll Go All the Way” perfectly captures the heart and soul of being a Cubs fan.  It has this amazing anthem, sing along quality, and just like a classic Irish pub song it just makes you want to sing along and fills your heart with emotion.

The song has been played on local Chicago radio but unfortunately has not yet seen an “official” release, which I find shocking.  I hope that the Cubs Charities and Eddie Vedder can get together on this and release it as a single with all the proceeds used for charitable causes.  I don’t see how you could go wrong with that and it would probably sell tens of thousands of copies.  I hope somebody out there is reading this that can make it happen.

The version that is out there and you’ve heard on the radio was recorded live at and Eddie Vedder concert at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago of August 2008.  If it ever is officially released you can bet I’ll let you know.  For now, please enjoy the video above of Eddie Vedder’s Cubs song “Someday We’ll Go All the Way”.  (Lyrics Below)

It’s kind of perfect that it came out in time for the 2008 season.  It became a great Cubs anthem and yet ended up summing up the sad end to the remarkable Cubs 2008 season.  In the end, we were left still waiting for “someday”.

Please Cubbies, please…. Let us all live to see Someday

Eddie Vedder Cubs Song All the Way

“Someday We’ll Go All The Way” Lyrics by Eddie Vedder

Yeah, don’t let anyone say that it’s just a game.
For I’ve seen other teams and it’s never the same.
When you’re born in Chicago, you’re blessed and you’re healed,
The first time you walk into Wrigley Field.
Our heroes wear pinstripes and heroes in blue,
Give us the chance to feel like heroes too.
Whether we’ll win and if we should lose, we know
Someday we’ll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we’ll go all the way.

We are one with the Cubs, with the Cubs we’re in love.
Yeah, hold our heads high as the underdogs.
We are not fair-weather, but foul-weather fans.
Like brothers in arms, in the streets and the stands.
There’s magic in the Ivy and the old scoreboard.
The same one I stared at as a kid keeping score.
In a world full of greed, I could never want more.
Someday we’ll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we’ll go all the way. (repeat)

And here’s to the men and the legends we’ve known.
Teaching us faith and giving us hope.
United we stand and united we’ll fall
Down to our knees the day we win it all.
Yeah, Ernie Banks said, “Oh, let’s play two”.
Or did he mean two hundred years?
In this same ballpark, our diamond, our jewel.
The home of our joy and our tears.
Keeping traditions, and wishes made new,
The place where our grandfathers’ fathers, they grew.
The spiritual feeling if I ever knew.
And if you ain’t been, I am sorry for you.
And when the day comes for that last winning run,
and I’m crying and covered in beer.
I look to the sky and know I was right today.
Someday we’ll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we’ll go all the way.
