Harry Caray Cub Fan Bud Man Commercial 1985

Harry Carey 1985 Cub Fan Bud Man Commercial

Harry Carry Cubs Fan Bud Man

Here is another classic Harry Caray Budweiser Beer commercial from back in the day.  (I’ve previously posted a Harry Caray Budweiser Beer commercial from 1984.) This video is the legendary “Cub Fan, Bud Man” commercial from 1985.

It’s hard for me to believe this commercial is almost 25 years old now.  I remember seeing this video every single time I watched a Cubs that year, which was a lot because expectations were high after the 1984 season and also because there were so many more games televised on WGN back then.  Also, I was young enough to have “summers off”.  Don’t you miss those?

I was definitely not anywhere near the age to be drinking beer yet but I loved the “Cub Fan, Bud Man” commercial because I loved Harry Caray, I loved the Cubs and this song was catchy.  To watch it now though, it’s so incredibly dated it’s hilarious.  The music in the commercial is just amazingly cheesy.  The line “1984 was just a start, we’re going to bring a pennant to this park!” has proven to be way too optimistic.

But what do you expect, we’re Cubs fans?!  We have to be optimistic.  I believed every word of it back then and I believe every word of it now.

Go Cubs, This is the Year!

And Harry…. This Bud’s For You.

Lyrics to “Cub Fan Bud Man” Harry Caray Commercial

Now there’s lots of teams throughout this land, But I proud to be a Cubbie fan. Believe me ‘84 was just the start, We’re gonna bring a pennant to this park. Hey! I’m a Cub fan. And I’m a Bud Man. Holy Cow! We’ll Win the Series before we’re through, Cub fans – This Bud’s for You. I’m a Bud Man. And I’m a Cub Fan. I’m a Cub Fan. And I’m a Bud Man.

Harry Caray and Budweiser Beer

One great thing about these commercial is that Harry Caray may be a paid spokesperson for Budweiser, but you would have found him drinking Bud Beer anyway. Harry Caray really WAS a Cub Fan – Bud Man. It was no act.

He was even nicknamed “The Mayor of Rush Street” – a reference to Harry Carry’s fondness for drinking and late nights on Chicago’s famous bar filled neighborhood. Harry was a guy who liked to have fun and life life to the fullest.  He was also hopelessly optimistic.  These are all things that Chicago Cubs fans respect in others.  Harry was one of us.
