Hello again Cubs fans. Today I’m going to answer a reader question I received regarding the history of Wrigley Field.  To answer this question I’ll be starting at the very beginning of Wrigley Field’s history, before it was even Wrigley Field and the Chicago Cubs ever played there. How Old is Wrigley Field and When Was it Built?

Historic Wrigley Field was built in 1914, so that would make Wrigley Field is 96 years old.

Wrigley Field is the oldest ballpark in the National League and second oldest ballpark in age after Boston’s Fenway Park which is two years older. After those two historic baseball stadiums, the next oldest park is Dodger Stadium which was built in 1962, so there really aren’t any other stadiums which are even close in age to Wrigley and Fenway.

The current location of Wrigley Field was originally the home of the Chicago Lutheran Theological Seminary from 1891 – 1912, back when this area was a quiet, mostly undeveloped suburban area. The “L” was extended to the “Lakeview” area in 1900 and this started a development boom which caused the Seminary to sell it’s property so it could move to the more peaceful Maywook, Illinois. Before the Chicago Cubs moved to Wrigley Field they played in West Side park and briefly in South Side Park (see Where Did the Chicago Cubs Play Before Wrigley Field?)  Though Wrigley Field is not the only stadium the Cubs have ever played in, it has come to be their home and a symbol of the franchise, a city landmark and an icon of sports.
