Jake Fox Hits First Major League Home Run

Jake Fox Celebrates with Soriano and Theriot
Jake Fox Hits His First Major League Home Run
Jake Fox had a three hit day and hit his first major league home run against the Tigers Armando Galaraga on June 25, 2009. There wasn’t any doubt on his first home run which gave the Cubs a three run lead in the 1st inning.
We’ve all been wondering if this kid can really hit or not at the major league level and recently he’s been getting a chance to display his talents, getting starts for the Cubs at third base and right field. In his limited playing time Jake Fox has gone 13 for 34 with a .353 batting average and .559 slugging. Not only did he get his first home run but Fox also added a single and double.
Now the bad news. Despite his 3-hit, 3-RBI day, the Cubs lost the game and were swept by the Tigers, giving the Tigers seven straight wins against the Cubs going back to 2001 and a seven game winning streak. Ted Lilly just didn’t have his good stuff this game. The loss also dropped the Cubs a game below .500, although they’re still only 3 1/2 games out of first. My last post may have been a bit of a rant but the Cubbies are still in it.
As Pat Houghs said today “A .500 team is often the most frustrating team of all. They’re good enough to beat any team 2 games out of 3 but still manage to often lose 2 out of 3 against any team. When your team is 20 games back you know they’re out of it but a .500 team keeps teasing you. “
The Cubbies sure have been teasing us. They win four games a row in dramatic fashion and then immediately lost four games in a row in disappointing fashion. The Cubs just keep treading water, somehow staying close to the division leaders but unable to put together a consistant run.
Us Cubs fans just have to try and keep the faith and keep hoping the Cubbies put it all together. There’s still 93 games remaining - plenty of time to stage a comeback. At this time in 2007 the Cubs were seven games below .500 and still ended up winning the divsion. Noone has run away with the NL Central and the Cubs still have games against all the teams ahead of them in the standings.
So let’s focus on the positive: Jake Fox, the kid who was tearing up the minor leagues got another start and hit his first major league home run. He’s been seeing more playing time and as long as he can keep hitting and driving in runs, will continue to see more.
There’s still a couple more weeks before Aramis Ramirez will be back for Jake Fox to prove he belongs on the big league team. I hope he makes the most of it and can help the Cubs win some games. Anyone who can drive in runs should be getting the start right now, no matter who has to sit on the bench instead. If I were Pinella, I would keep playing Fox for as long as he keeps hitting
So congratulations Jake Fox! We hope to see a lot more big hits from you in the future.
GO CUBS!
