Randy Wells Gets First Major League Win
It’s finally happening! The Cubs offense is getting their act together and the curse against Randy Wells has lifted. On June 21, 2009 Randy Wells recorded his first major league win, the Cubs swept the Cleveland Indians and the Cubs won their fourth game in a row.
Like many fans, I’ve been pulling for Randy Wells, the kid who was called up from AA when Zambrano was suspended and has never looked back. He goes out, works fast, throws strikes, shows good composure on the mound and has been rock solid. Between Randy Wells and Ted Lilly, they’ve kept the Cubs starters on the right track and continually give the team a chance to win. What more could you ask for?
A win. Poor Randy kept leaving the game with four run leads, only to watch the bullpen blow game after game. Or he would leave the gave having given up two runs, only to watch the Cubs lose 2-1. But it finally all came together on Sunday. Congratulations Randy Wells, I hope this is the first win of many in your big league career.
Other highlights from the game: Jake Fox got his first major league start at third base and drove in three runs. Geovany Soto hit a home run and drove in two. Derrek Lee extended his hitting streak to 18 games. Andres Blanco only had one hit again but made it count and also made a spectacular play with the Indians threatening in the ninth. Milton Bradley had two hits and is starting to look consistant as well.
A few days ago when the Cubs came back to beat the White Sox, we all hoped that it would be the start of something good. Four wins in a row later, the Cubs look like they’re building some momentum and play more like the team we hoped they would be all year. Keep it up guys!
