4/23/09 - Relief pitcher Luis Vizcaino designated for assignment. Pitcher Jeff Samardzija recalled from Triple-A Iowa.
5/4/09 - Infielder Bobby Scales recalled from AAA Iowa Cubs. Pitcher Carlos Zambrano placed on 15-day DL.
5/6/09 - Pitcher Chad Fox recalled from AAA Iowa. Pitcher Jeff Samardzija optioned to AAA Iowa Cubs.
5/8/09 - Pitcher Randy Wells recalled from AAA Iowa.
5/8/09 - Cubs Acquired infielder Ryan Freel from the Baltimore Orioles for outfielder Joey Gathright.
5/27/09 - Cubs Optioned Neil Cotts and Bobby Scales to AAA and called up pitcher Jason Waddell and infielders Andres Blanco and Jake Fox.
7/1/09 - Cubs acquired infield Jeff Baker from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for Class A pitcher Al Alburquerque.

How the 2009 Chicago Cubs Roster Was Built

Returning Players:

Jose Ascanio - Called up from the AAA Iowa Cubs in September 2008. Acquired from Atlanta Braves in 2007.
Neal Cotts - Relief pitcher resigned for 1 year in offseason.
Ryan Dempster - Starting pitcher and former reliever signed a 4 year contract extension during the offseason.
Mike Fontenot - Returns for his 3rd season with the Cubs and will be the starting second basemen for the first time.
Chad Fox - Pitched briefly for Cubs in 2008 before injury. Signed as free agent.
Kosuke Fukudome - Returns for his second season after his rookie year in MLB after signing as free agent in 2008.
Angel Guzman - Right handed relief pitcher called up from minors in September 2008 after rehabbing from surgery. Once a highly regarded prospect, Guzman was out of options but pitched well enough in spring training to got one last chance at the big leagues with the Cubs.
Rich Harden - Resigned 1-year contract extension after being acquired from the Oakland Athletics in late 2008.
Koyie Hill - Third season with Cubs after winning backup catcher position in spring training. First time he will begin season with the Cubs after spending almost all of 2008 in the minors and joining the team midseason in 2007 after trade with Padres.
Micah Hoffpauir - Will be starting the season as a major leaguer for the first time at age 30. Expected to be main pinch hitter off the plate, formerly Daryle Ward’s role for the past two seasons.
Reed Johnson - Returns for his second season with the Cubs after resigning a 1-year contract. Acquired on waivers in 2008 after released by Toronto Blue Jays.
Derrek Lee - Derrek Lee will be the Cubs starting first basemen for the sixth consecutive season.
Ted Lilly - Third season as a starting pitcher for the Cubs after two solid seasons.
Carlos Marmol - Will be his fourth season with Cubs but only second time he started the season on the major league roster.
Sean Marshall - Fourth Season with the Cubs and first time on opening day roster. Will begin season as the new #5 starter.
Geovany Soto - Returns to follow up his Rookie of the Year season of 2008.
Aramis Ramirez - Returning as the Cubs third basemen and top clutch hitter for the seventh season.
Ryan Theriot - Returning for his fourth season overall and second as the Cubs opening day shortstop.
Jeff Samardzija - Returns for his second season with the Cubs after being recalled from AAA Iowa.
Alfonso Soriano - Returns for his third season as Cubs lead of man and left fielder.
David Wells - Second season with Cubs after being called up from AAA Iowa Cubs in September 2008 and again in May 2009.
Carlos Zambrano - Leads team in seniority with his Ninth Season as a Chicago Cub.

New Players

Milton Bradley - Signed a 3-year contract as a free agent. Played for the Rangers in 2008.
Ryan Freel - Acquired from Baltimore Orioles for Joey Gathright.
Joey Gathright - Signed 1-year contract as free agent. Played for the Royals in 2007-08.
Kevin Gregg - Acquired from the Marlins for minor league pitcher John Ceda.
Aaron Heilman - Acquired from the Seattle Mariners for infielder Ronny Cedeno and pitcher Garrett Olson.
Aaron Miles - Signed two year contract as a free agent. Played for the Cardinals in 2007-08.
David Patton - Acquired in the Rule 5 draft from the Colorado Rockies.
Luis Vizcaino - Acquired from the Colorado Rockies for pitcher Jason Marquis.
